Darlys (Dar) Baum dedicated her entire career to advancing affordable housing.
Ms. Baum worked for the South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA) for 30 years. She served as program director and deputy director before becoming executive director in 1995. She retired in 2006.
Ms. Baum served as a member of Fannie Mae’s National Housing Impact Advisory Council, a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) of Des Moines board of directors, and as chair of the FHLBs Housing and Economic Development Committee.
She was an active member of the National Council of State Housing Agencies, as well as many state and local affordable housing and advocacy organizations and councils.
In 2003 Ms. Baum received South Dakota’s first “Spirit of Housing Pioneer” award. In 2006 she was honored for “Distinguished Achievement for South Dakota,” an award granted annually by the South Dakota Newspaper Association.
Prior to joining SDHDA in 1975, Ms. Baum was associated with a real estate agency and a financial institution in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Ms. Baum is now retired and resides in Burlington.
